Abstract:

People may think Engineering and Physics are about strict hard laws, rules and certainty. However, this isn’t always the case and perception can influence how something is designed. Orla will be exploring concepts of perception and bias in the context of acoustics and product development. She will discuss how perception can be engineered, what unconscious bias is and what behind the scenes testing needs to be done to fully validate a new vehicle at Jaguar Land Rover.

Orla Murphy CEng MEng APMA MIET:

Orla is a Forward Model Quality Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover, focusing on problem solving and six sigma process improvement projects within the Electrical Engineering department. She studied an MEng degree in Electronics with Music at the University of Glasgow, completing part of her studies abroad at the University of Radford in the USA. She first joined Jaguar Land Rover as a sponsored student in 2012.  For five years Orla worked as an Audio Calibration Engineer, optimising the sound systems within Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. She became chartered through the IET in February and moved to her new role in Quality in March of 2017.

Orla was the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year in 2015 and was the Royal Academy of Engineering Young Engineer of the Year in 2016. Orla is a public speaker and talks regularly at schools, conferences and events. Enthusiastic about encouraging more diversity in engineering and manufacturing, she aims to dispel the myths about engineering and manufacturing and entice more young talent into the sector, by showing how dynamic and exciting careers in the sector can be. In her spare time, Orla plays viola with the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra.
