Abstract:
Chris Rees, President of the BCS, will speak about his presidential theme: Ethics. He will focus on Artificial Intelligence and the ethical problems that this fast developing technology raises, and also consider the practical issues that confront us in IT when ethical considerations arise, and how they may be addressed.
After graduating from St. Andrews University, and a period in technical support with IBM, Chris moved to the USA with National CSS Inc (later Dun & Bradstreet), a pioneer in timesharing and virtual systems. Returning to the UK, he joined Logica as a Principal Consultant, then General Manager for Payment, Settlement and Trading Systems, and finally Managing Director of Logica Software Products Ltd.
In 1986 he joined Touche Ross Management Consultants (later Deloitte Consulting) as a Partner. His assignments included leading roles in the Fraud Audits of privatisation share issues, using expert systems to detect fraud, and acting as Programme Director for the Gas Industry Domestic Competition Pilot.
In October 1996, he co-founded Charteris. He led consulting engagements for clients including National Air Traffic Services (NATS), the Global Fund, UNESCO and Centrica. He led Charteris’ Expert Witness practice for many years and acted as an expert in many high-profile IT disputes. He retired in 2015.
He co-authored “From Principles to Profit – the Art of Moral Management” (Duckworth, 2006) and was a partner in Principled Business, a firm providing training and consultancy in business ethics.
