How to get to Coventry University by Car

From:-
  • From South Birmingham you want to be on the A45 (well, not really, but its no worse than the M6 at night!). If you know how to get to the Burnt Post then you've already got a good idea of the route I'm going to offer you. Either
    • head for the city centre near Allesley - the A4114 (Pickford Way) leads you to Hollyhead Road (still the A4114), and via a number of sets of traffic lights (where you keep going straight on) to the ring road (A4053) junction "8". Turn left onto the ring-road and stay with it upto the roundabout at junction "1" ...following it round to the right ... miss junction 2 then come off at junction "3" (sign-posted Leicester / A4600), moving over to the right as the 2 slip roads merge into 4 lanes onto a large roundabout....at which you want the 4th exit for Far Gosford Street.
    • OR
    • Get almost to the Burnt Post
      • but turn left onto the A429, following the signs for the city centre. Pass the memorial park on your right, and at the second set of lights bear to the left onto Warwick Road (still the A429).
      • If you miss the A429 Kenilworth Road, and find yourself going past the Burnt Post don't fret. Keep going until you come to the roundabout with the B4113, then turn left there onto the Leamington Road. Follow this and you will get to an uphill dog-leg sort of bit with traffic lights. Bear right onto the Warwick Road (A429 again).
Warwick Road leads you to junction "6" of the ring-road, via a silly little mini-roundabout (where you are going straight on) to the ring road. You need to go East/anti-clockwise, so turn right onto the ring-road, go under junction 5, bear over to the left following the signs for Leicester and come off the ring-road at junction "3", moving over to the right as the 2 slip roads merge into 4 lanes onto a large roundabout....at which you want the 4th exit for Far Gosford Street.

  • From North Birmingham you may as well use the M6. The really keen will avoid the Aston Expressway (express??? not until after Dec '02 apparently ...but I was using it upto Feb 03 and it was clegged with roadworks even then...and current promise was Dec 03!!!) Heading for Coventry, I recommend junction 3 as your exit.... well I would were it not for the awful mess now that so many roads converge there and as it is controlled by traffic lights. Coming off the M6 you want to be turning right onto the A444 "Bedworth Bypass" so you want the second exit off the roundabout. Straight on at the first roundabout, left-ish (but really straight-on at the second then right at the third, onto the B4113 Foleshill Road. Following this road for the city-centre, you'll enjoy many sets of lights and other obstacles designed to prevent you from going too fast, but eventually you'll come to a roundabout that is junction "1" of the ring-road. Turning "left" onto the ring-road, missing junction "2" you need junction "3" for Leicester, but move over to the right as soon as you come off this, then when the other slip-road (from the other side of the ring-road) merges, you again need to move over to the right as soon as it is safe, because you are turning right at the roundabout. Taking the 4th exit for Far Gosford Street.

Once in Far Gosford Street you pass under the ring-road and at the next set of lights you need to turn right into Cox Street. The road narrows, passes over a zebra-crossing (the footpath shown in the larger-scale map below) and just beyond this is Grove Street Car park - on the right. 50p after 6:00 p.m. You've now got to Grove Street car park.

From Coventry City Centre...buy car??...you lost or something? Seriously, thought, you need to aim for Grove street car park. Most of the "inner" ring is now pedestrianised - or at least "traffic calmed" and therefore circumnavigation is not easy. If taking the ring road, come off at junction "3" for Leicester.... getting over to the right ASAP. Turning right onto the roundabout, take the 4th exit - Far Gosford Street, thence right into Cox street, and right (after the crossing) into Grove Street car park. 50p after 6:00 p.m. You've now got to Grove Street car park.

From the M69 Junction 2. You have a choice of two routes

  1. The A4600 route.
    • From the M69 bear left following the A4600 signs. A merry loop-the-loop brings you upto a roundabout.
    • From the M6 come off and follow the signs for the A4600, merging into the traffic coming off from the M69, upto a roundabout.

You need the second exit for the A4600 for the city centre. This is dual carriageway most of the way in. Straight on at two roundabouts, straight on at the lights, to a funny sort of roundabout, where you are still going straight on (middle lane), onto Ansty Road. You may find cars parked in the left hand carriageway from here-on, as it is the residential bit. Straight on at pedestrian lights (watch out for the popular right-turn here, you may need to move into the left-hand lane, then back into the right after the cross-roads). Straight on at the next set of lights (cross-roads with Sewall Highway on your right) Wyken Pippin pub on your left, BP garage on the right. I'm not bringing you the quickest way here, just the way you're least likely to get lost.... Over the pedestrian lights and at the next set of lights bear left and down the hill to the "Forum" roundabout. Turn right (still heading for the city centre) this is now Walsgrave Road, and is single carriageway. Straight on at two sets of lights (not counting the pedestian lights), and where the single carriageway becomes three, take the middle lane and bear right at the next set of traffic lights, onto Sky Blue Way.

  2. The A46 route.
    • If you are Northbound on the M6 approaching junction 2, you need to come off following the signs for the A46 merging in with the traffic coming off from the M69 upto the roundabout. Take the first exit for the A46.
    • If coming from the M69 keep to the middle or outer lane, the M69 becomes the A46.

The A46 is dual carriageway, you come to a "small" roundabout (for Coombe Park), "straight" on (i.e. left-ish) keeping with the A46 until the next roundabout where you are turning right. You will see TGI Friday on your right as you approach this roundabout.

You are now on the A428 (Brandon Road) follow this (mixed dual and single carriageways) keeping straigh-on at three small roundabouts. At the traffic lights fork left for the A427 (Binley Road). Straight on at the next lights (dual carriageway rapidly becoming single carriageway) then the road becomes dual carriageway again then 4 lanes at some more traffic lights. Straight on at these lights (Marconi on your left as you go up the hill). On the other side of the hill it becomes single carriageway again. Straight on at the next set of lights following Binley Road over a set of pedestrian lights and eventually to a large roundabout. You are going straight on here, so you need the second exit to stay with the A427.
Binley Road(A427) leads to more traffic lights. The road here is 3 lanes, keep to the left (but don't take the left fork or you'll end up in Gulston Road!) Straight on at these lights and also at the next (onto Sky Blue Way - which is part of the A4600).

Sky Blue Way starts as 3 lanes but soon goes down to 2 - keep in the left-hand lane. At the bottom of the hill there is a big roundabout. Take the second exit - for Far Gosford Street.
You pass under the Coventry ring-road and at the next set of lights you need to turn right into Cox Street. The road narrows, passes over a zebra-crossing (the footpath shown in the larger-scale map below) and just beyond this is Grove Street Car park - on the right. 50p after 6:00p.m. You've now got to Grove Street car park.

From "South of the Watford Gap" From the M1 from the South leave M1 at the M45, follow this, it becomes the A45 just outside Dunchurch. Keep with the A45 for Coventry. You will pass the Peugeot Ryton Works and eventually come to a large roundabout with the A46. (Just after the Ryton works you go down a hill and under a road bridge. Start moving over to the right, so you are in the correct lane when you get to the big roundabout with the A46/A45.) Note this roundabout is controlled by traffic lights.
You want the third exit for the B4110, join the roundabout, bearing right but "spiral out" (the first exit is for the airport, second for the A45, third B4110 and fourth for A46/M69). You are now on the "London Road", keep with this single carriageway becomes 3 lanes at the traffic lights (keep left), rapidly becoming single track again after the lights, then becomes dual carriagway again, start moving over to the right here for the next roundabout.
At this next roundabout (also with traffic lights) take the third exit (not the second for the SuperStore but third for Seven Stars Industrial Estate). This is Humber Road and following it past another part of Peugeot (on your right) straight on at two sets of lights upto a big roundabout. Turn left onto Binley Road (A427) for city centre. See above for the route from here-on.

How to get to Coventry University by Train

By Train it is less of a strain. If you are well-heeled, get a taxi from the Station to the University. Or walk - BCS president Rachel Burnet did - in the rain - for our Schools Competiton finals! The rest of us will get the bus. Nice new BendiBusses!
The number 27 serves the station now, and now stops at Pool Meadow bus station.
The timings shown here are approximate, being taken from the "Summer Timetable" now available from network Coventry. I recommend you check out the travel coventry website :
Route No 27 17 27 17 27 17 17 17(!)
Depart Station 16:47 17:02 17:18 17:33 17:50 18:05 18:20 18:35
Arrive Pool Meadow 16:57 17:12 17:28 17:43 18:00 18:15 18:30 18:45

Please note: I've not used the bus from the station for about three years; the route may have changed!

The bus will leave the station, go around station square, Park Road and Manor Road, and come to a big roundabout (murder to get on from the Station!!). This is over the Ring Road. The bus will cross over the top of the ring-road and head towards the city centre, along Warwick Road. It will turn left into Greyfriars Road, head straight on into Victoria Road (large Co-Op on your left at a roundabout with Croft Road). Straight on into Corporation Street and straight on into Hales Street.
At some traffic lights it will turn right into (and up) Trinity Street. At the top is the Holy Trinity Church. The bus then bears right into Broadgate, you will see the Lady Godiva statue on your left. I'm telling you the landmarks so you have some confidence that you know where you are! (You can get off here if you wish, but the bus does go into Cox Street eventually, so sit tight, have faith!) Passing Lady Godiva in Broadgate, the bus bears left into High Street, a jolly pedestrianised bit with bollards to calm the traffic. At the end of this are traffic lights (on your left is the Council House), the bus turns left into Earl Street (it may stop outside "Browns") and heads down Earl Street, past the Herbert Art Gallery (on your left).
The bus then turns left into Cox Street and going down the hill, crosses a pedestrian crossing. YOU NEED TO GET OFF HERE...I can't remember if this is a request stop, so ring the bell as the bus turns into Cox Street.
The bus stops with parts of Coventry University on your left. Walk back to the pedestrian (zebera) crossing, and cross over it. There is a footpath in front of you (slightly right and up, between the buildings) follow this out into Grove Street. The footpath continues into, and across, Grove Street car-park as a series of pedestrian crossings. (Information taken from Routes 17 & 27 leaflet, re-issued 27 April 2003.)

How to get to Coventry University by Bus

I cannot comment on how easy it is to get to the University from out-of-town!
All information is according to my Bus Maps (valid from March 2003 unless shown otherwise in brackets - believed to be most recent).

NO!!! The bus routes have changed a couple of times since I wrote this section of the directions, they may be completely wrong now! The corporation closed off certain roads and directed the busses around Broadgate. Then that caused the bus station (Pool Meadow) to be under-utilised, so they re-opended parts of the pedestrianised area to busses, and routed all busses through the bus station. Hmmm.... please check the travel coventry website before you take the bus!

Centro recommend that you confirm with their hotline on 024 76 559 559.
Alternatively, you could try their website at www.travelcoventry.co.uk The following buses pass through (or terminate at) Pool Meadow:
  • 10 - Broad Lane (via Eastern Green & Tile Hill) to Pool Meadow
  • 11 - Broad Lane (via Spon End) to Pool Meadow
  • 12 & 12A - Pool Meadow to Leamingtom Spa
(via Herald Avenue, Warwick Uni & Kenilworth) (June 2002)
  • 12W - Pool Meadow to Westwood Business Park
(via Herald Avenue & Warwick University) (June 2002)

From within Pool Meadow follow the signs for Coventry Cathedral & Tourist Information. There are three exits from the Pool Meadow Bus Station. If you come out of the bus station by a cross-roads with Millenuim Square to your right - now resplendent with the Whittle Arch, and Sainsburys opposite you, turn left and walk along Fairfax Street until you come to the next set of lights. You should pass under the Britannia Hotel and come to some more traffic lights.
If you come out of the "Middle Door" marked "Fairfax Street" you will again see Sainsbury's in front of you and the Whittle Arch to your right. Again turn left and walk under the hotel to the lights.
If you come out of Pool Meadow by the other exit you will see the hotel to your right and you will be at these lights!

Cross Fairfax Street at the lights and go under the Priory Street halls of residence, following Priory Street upto the Cathedral. With the Cathedral Steps to your right, turn left, cross the new Priory Square (you will see the Tourist Information building on your right at the top of the hill) and follow the footpath across the Coventry University campus. The Alan Berry Building (formerly F block) should be on your left as you take the footpath. Down a flight of steps you will go deeper into the campus with the James Starley Engineering Block on your right and the Lanchester Resturant across the grass on your left. You will see sign-posts to the Armstrong Siddely block as you follow the footpath. Follow this footpath under The Sir Frank Whittle Building (formerly D block) hence down another flight of steps to a pedestian crossing.
Across this crossing the footpath bears slightly right and up and passing to the left of the Bugatti Buildings continues into, and across, Grove Street car-park. Now you've got there.

By Bus, via Broadgate
The following buses go up and over Broadgate. This too, is not a complete list.
  • 3 - Binley to Holbrooks (via Stoke Aldermoor & Lockhurst Lane)
  • 4 - Binley to Hen Lane (via Stoke Aldermoor & Lockhurst Lane)
  • 7 - Bell Green to Brownshill Green
  • 8 - Bell Green
  • 31A - City, Woodway Park, Lentons Lane & back to City (via Walsgrave Triangle)
  • 31C - City, Lentons Lane, Woodway Park & back to City (via Walsgrave Triangle)
  • 17 - Coventry Rail Station to Walsgrave Hospital (April 2003)
  • 27 - Coventry Rail Station to Wyken (April 2003)
  • 32 - Tanyard Farm (Tile Hill North) to Potters Green (July 2003)
  • 32A - Tanyard Farm to Walsgrave Business Park (Walsgrave Triangle) (July 2003)
  • 32C - Tanyard Farm to Bell Green (July 2003)
  • 32W - Massey Ferguson to Bell Green
  • 51 - City to Victoria Farm (via Sainsbury's Superstore) - seems to connect with the number 31!
  • 75 - Bell Green to Brownshill Green
(See below for the number 13 - Whitmore Park to Willenhall via Binley Road)
I'm going to direct you via Coventry Cathedral, which may be sign-posted from Broadgate.
In Broadgate, cross at the crossing (in the middle) so you are facing the Lady Godiva statue, with the road behind you. Beyond the statue is the Cathedral Lanes shopping precinct. Turn left and walk to the edge of Cathedral Lanes, then turn right and walk down the (left-hand) side of these shops.
You should then pass the Holy Trinity church, now on your left, and proceeding forwards, you will soon see the Cathedral in front of you. Pass down the footpath between the old and new cathedrals, and down the steps of the cathedral into Priory Street. Cross the road (without turning) and straight in front of you will be a footpath, with The Alan Berry Block (formerly F-Block) to the left of it, and a wall to the right. Proceed down the steps, you will go deeper into the campus with the James Starley Engineering Block on your right (Formerly C Block) and the Lanchester Resturant across the grass on your left. Follow this footpath under The Sir Frank Whittle buliding (forerly D block) hence down another flight of steps to a pedestian crossing.
Across this crossing the footpath continues (with the Bugatti Buildings on your right) into, and across, Grove Street car-park. Now you've got there.
The number 13 bus significantly misses Broadgate and Pool Meadow. It does stop in the Burgess. Thats not a lot of use to you if you don't know what to look out for, so I'm going to give you some pointers. If you know the way, fine, ignore the following, if not, here goes. According to my bus map/timetable for April 2003, the number 13 either starts in Wheelwright Lane (Whitmore Park) and terminates in Remembrance Road (Willenhall) or vice-versa. The good news is that which ever way the bus runs, it is funnelled into the city centre in the same way... it eventually comes into Hales Street. At the end of Hales Street it swings right by the new Millenium Square, with the new Whittle Arch on your left, and Sainsbury's right in front of you (until the right turn when it is to your left) and ascends Trinity Street. It then does a sharp right over the top (at Cross Cheaping, look out for the bus stops, taxi rank and pedestrian lights) and descends down the Burgess.
Get off in the Burgess.
Walk back up the Burgess (passing a camera shop on your right) with Alders immediately in front of you, cross the road (the access to the West Orchards shopping precinct car park) and (before the arch leading up) turn left so you now have Alders on your right.
With Wetherspoons in front of you, walk to the railings, cross the road towards Wetherspoons, then turn right. Keep walking up the hill (this is actually Trinity Street, leading to Broadgate) until you get to the Cathedral Lanes shopping centre, with the Holy Trinity church on your left. Turn left and follow the footpath between the church and the shopping centre.
Proceeding forwards, you will soon see the Cathedral in front of you. Pass down the footpath between the old and new cathedrals, and down the steps of the cathedral into Priory Street. Cross the road (without turning) and straight in front of you will be a footpath, with The Alan Berry (formerly F-Block) to the left of it, and a wall to the right. Proceed down the steps, you will go deeper into the campus with the James Strarley Engineering Block on your right (formerly C Block) and the Lanchester Resturant across the grass on your left. Follow this footpath under The Sir Frank Whittle (formerly D) block hence down another flight of steps to a pedestian crossing.
Across this crossing the footpath continues (slightly to the right, and up, between more University buildings, with the Bugatti Buildings on your right) into, and across, Grove Street car-park. Now you've got there.

So, you've got there, now what? On foot or bus, you'll be crossing Cox street on the pedestrian crossing and cut across Grove Street car park.
By car, you'll be in Grove Street car park.... which is under the ring-road. Facing up the hill, you need to go left along the footpath.
Either way, you'll come to some more University Buildings. AS block (Armstrong Siddely) is the one on your left, and the footpath leads you to the entrance (on your left). Come in through the doors, make your way to the first floor. Stairs - turn right, lift - turn left, through the doors and along the coridoor. AS124 will be on your right after the common-room. Do come in, we're quite friendly and don't bite. We even offer Tea, coffee and Biscuits.
